US Discovery Institute hits back at EU statement that intelligent design is threat to human rights

The US based Discovery Institute, which promotes as scientific the theory of intelligent design, has hit back following the Council of Europe decision (reported in the last issue of BCN) to label explanations for origins - like intelligent design and creationism - as a threat to human rights.

Christian magistrate to appeal against verdict of Employment Tribunal

A Christian magistrate is to ask the Court of Appeal to rule on how far people with deeply held religious convictions can rely on the law of the land to uphold their rights and conscience against a growing secularist agenda. (See BCN 26 October)

New Reform chairman calls for courageous action

Reform, a large Anglican network, told members that they must prepare for courageous action as the Church of England becomes driven by an increasingly liberal agenda said the Rev Rodney Thomas, the new Reform chairman on 22 October.

The majority Free Church of Scotland has announced that the Moderator of its 2008 General Assembly will be the Rev Kenneth M. Ferguson, minister of Cross Free Church, Ness, on the Isle of Lewis.

Jerusalem Arson Hate Crime

Late at night on 23rd October, Narkis Street Baptist Church, Jerusalem, also known as The Baptist House, suffered an arson attack. Arsonists broke in and fires were set in three different places, no one was harmed though thousands of pounds worth of damage was done. There would have been greater damage if Jewish neighbours had not swiftly called the emergency services. If this happened to a synagogue abroad, everyone would shout anti-Semitism, a neighbour told Israel Today. What can only be described as a religious hate crime has been roundly condemned by Israeli officials...

Ginkgo

The Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is a living fossil, said to be the worlds oldest tree, being the only survivor of a group which flourished in geological time and was thought to be extinct. However it was found growing in Eastern China and was later planted in Japan. Ginkgo was imported into this country where scattered specimens can be found. Our illustration shows one growing outside the Department of Botany in the University of Bristol.

Abortion: Science and Technology committee report biased

Abortion law should be further liberalised according to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee in their report published 31 October. They conclude:

  • There is no scientific basis to reduce the 24 week upper limit for abortion.
  • The requirement for two doctors signatures before an abortion can be carried out should be removed.
  • Nurses and midwives should be allowed to carry out early abortions.
  • An exhaustive list of abnormalities on what constitutes serious handicap (which is used as a reason for aborting foetuses after 24 weeks) is not feasible, but that guidance on the meaning would be helpful.
  • Foetal pain is not relevant to the question of abortion law.

MAF repairing lives in Bangladesh

Mission Aviation Fellowship pilot Chad Tilley has flown doctors to Friendships floating hospital in Gaibanda, Bangladesh, to rebuild childrens lives. The floating hospital is towed to remote parts of the country where people do not have access to healthcare.
