1. The existence of God

The first subject to consider with the Gospel message is the
originator of the message: God Himself. Man in the 21st century
has a list of objections to the existence of God. Many say, 'No one
can prove that God exists, therefore he does not', but the same logic
could be applied the other way, 'No one can disprove that God exists,
so He must.'
If I was to say that there was no gold in China I
would have to know the make-up of every speck of dust in China. I
would have to inspect every tooth for gold fillings and every rock
and place. In my whole lifetime I could never be sure that there was
no gold in China. People who say that there is no God cannot know for
certain as they don't know every single thing. In fact it is unlikely
that anyone knows 0.5% of everything there is to know in the
universe. Do you know how many loose rocks are on the moon? Do you
know how many grains of sand there are on Southend beach? How do
atheists know that there is not proof for God outside their limited
knowledge? A believer has faith that God exists and an atheist has
faith that He does not. Can there really be an answer? Is the
believer's faith a blind faith? Not by far! Take the existence of the
universe. Was it an accident? Some who believe the 'Big Bang' theory
would have people believe that everything came about by an explosion.
Now since when did order come out of chaos? Could a house be built by
an explosion in a brick factory?
'For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.' (Hebrews 3:4)
Though the Bible is talking here of the family 'house', we could quite
logically say that every dwelling place is built by men. The walls
around me, as I type, were placed by skilled bricklayers. The wires
in the walls were fitted by skilled electricians. The plumbing in my
home was fitted by skilled plumbers. All these things needed a plan
to work to, which came from a designer or architect. No random
explosion could have brought about my home. Is not the universe also
orderly? Does not this planet speak of an architect or designer? Why
is it that some men would have us believe that the universe and
everything in it came about by an accidental explosion? Where did the
matter for this explosion come from in the first place? Can something
come from nothing on its own? Surely these questions make us think.
Though men can shape and form raw materials, ultimately
'he that built all things is God.'
In the beginning, was there a Big Bang or a Big God?
Some men not only want us to believe that all matter came from nothing, they want us to believe
that life came from nothing as well.
They want us to believe that some amino acids got together billions
of years ago and decided to form DNA, which led to some basic one-cell lifeforms, which then evolved into
loads of random creatures, male and female. This theory can raise many questions in the mind.
For example:
- Which evolved first, the flower or
the bee? Would not the bee need the flower and the flower need the
bee? Could they have evolved at exactly the same time? How is it
that they seem to be made for each other? Bees fit inside flowers
like a glove and suck the nectar through a tube that seems made for
the purpose. The bee has fur to carry pollen to
other flowers. Does this not speak of a designer?
- Animals or insects are born and
instantly know their function, usually without any guidance from
their parents. They seem to be able to know how to hunt, make nests,
spin webs, make hives, etc. All from birth! It's as though they are
preprogrammed to perform certain tasks. So who programmed them and
where did the information come from?
- How can such sophisticated animals be a result of random
changes? If one believes in evolution then surely this mystical
force had an end result in mind? How can anything be built without
knowing the end result? A super computer takes years of engineering
genius to design and build. Who would disagree that a man's brain is
more sophisticated than any super computer on earth? (And smaller!)
Would a human brain come about by chance evolution? The alternative,
and perhaps more likely conclusion, is that there was an intelligent
designer.
The questions could go on and on. All man-made theories that
attempt to explain away God fall down somewhere. There is only one
absolute truth and that is: God made everything as stated in the
first sentence of the Bible.
'In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.' (Genesis 1:1).
We also read in the Bible:
'Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God,
so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.' (Hebrews 11:3)
Intelligent Designer
There is amazing order in the universe and on the
earth. What are the chances that the Moon (239,000 miles from the
Earth) appears exactly the same size as the Sun (93 to 95 Million
miles from the Earth)? So much so, that we can observe a solar
eclipse! Just think of all the animals and creatures that are fed and
watered everyday on this planet. Does not this speak of order?
The
strongest evidence of a creator God is under peoples' noses; it is
the human body. Who can say that they understand all of the
complexities of the human body? Some say we are just another animal,
but man is very different to the animals. Each person has a unique
personality and physical identity. Man has power to reason, knows
right and wrong, is capable of love and compassion. Man is inventive
and creative. Man can admire beauty, not only in the opposite sex,
but in sun sets and in nature. Is man just a freak accident at the
end of an evolutionary chain of random changes, or was man made in
the image of God? Is man just a bundle of random molecules and
chemicals and of no significance, or is man something more?
Think on these Bible verses:
'So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he
them.' (Genesis 1:27)
'I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul
knoweth right well.' (Psalm 139:14)
